Corporate shifts and regulatory pressures define today’s headlines. NVIDIA’s new SoC is just a very expensive laptop, US states target OpenAI over child safety, Disney buys the pieces of a bankrupt startup, and Orange España automates its fibre network.
NVIDIA’s new SoC is just a very expensive laptop

What happened. Microsoft and NVIDIA are launching the RTX Spark system-on-a-chip this autumn for the Surface Laptop Ultra and other Windows PCs (Engadget). The SoC features up to 20 NVIDIA Grace Arm CPU cores and a Blackwell GPU with up to 6,144 CUDA cores. NVIDIA claims these systems should be similarly powerful to RTX 5070 laptops. Pricing starts at $2,600 for 18-core models, while a Surface Laptop Ultra with 128GB of RAM will cost $5,900.
What we think. It is a lot of money to pay for a laptop that is essentially a desktop in a thin chassis. We are paying a premium for silicon that might be obsolete by next Christmas.
The good bit. The hardware provides enough power to run models locally.

US states target OpenAI over child safety

What happened. At least eight states, including Arizona, Arkansas, and West Virginia, are suing OpenAI for allegedly violating consumer protection laws (kolotv.com). The lawsuits claim ChatGPT holds nearly half of the American marketplace. Common Sense Media reported that some protections in ChatGPT for Teens do not work as intended. OpenAI stated that nearly 90% of teens using ChatGPT use it for learning or productivity.
What we think. Regulators are finally catching up to the fact that a chatbot is not a babysitter. The legal battle will likely focus on whether the company was transparent about its safety failures.
The good bit. Increased scrutiny may force much-needed transparency regarding how these models interact with younger, more vulnerable users.

Disney buys the pieces of a bankrupt startup

What happened. California startup Character.ai has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (texarkanagazette.com). Disney agreed to pay $20 million to license certain intellectual property from the company. Character.ai previously reached a valuation of $1 billion in 2023. The company maintains more than 20 million monthly active users.
What we think. The era of the billion-dollar AI unicorn burning cash without a path to profit is hitting a hard wall. Disney is simply picking up the intellectual assets at a discount.
The good bit. Large-scale IP holders are finding ways to integrate conversational AI into existing entertainment ecosystems.

Orange España automates its fibre network

What happened. Orange España has completed the deployment of an AI-based solution for its management platform (forbes.es). The tool uses advanced optical monitoring technology and AI to identify shared fibre segments and detect anomalies. Pilar Puerta, Director of Transmission at Orange España, received an award for this work. The solution is currently operational in different layers of the transport network.
What we think. Automated maintenance is much better than sending a technician out every time a light flickers. It is a quiet, functional use of AI that actually serves a purpose.
The good bit. This deployment reduces risks and optimises performance by identifying potential network failures before they cause outages.
